Tire Pressure Warning Lights: What They Mean and How Often to Actually Check

A tire pressure warning light on the dash gets treated as a nag rather than information, but it's actually reporting something specific: pressure has dropped below a set threshold in at least one tire. Worth understanding what it does and doesn't tell you.

What triggers the light

Most vehicles built in the last 15+ years use a TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) that reads each tire's actual pressure via a sensor and flags when one drops roughly 25% below the recommended PSI. It's reacting to a real number, not a rough guess.

What it doesn't tell you

Usually not which specific tire, unless your vehicle has a more detailed per-wheel display. And it won't tell you why the pressure dropped — could be simple temperature change, a slow leak, or a puncture. A digital tire pressure gauge tells you the actual number per tire in seconds, which narrows it down fast.

Temperature changes pressure more than people expect

Tire pressure drops roughly 1 PSI for every 10°F drop in outside temperature. A tire that was fine in September can trigger the warning light by the first genuinely cold week of the year — not a leak, just physics. This is why checking monthly (not just when the light comes on) catches slow changes before they become a warning.

How often to actually check

  • Monthly, at minimum, with a gauge — not by eye, since a tire can look fine 20% underinflated
  • Before any long highway trip
  • Any time there's a sudden seasonal temperature swing

Checking cold, not after driving

Pressure readings are only accurate when tires are "cold" — meaning the car has been parked for at least a few hours, not right after a drive, since friction heats tires and temporarily raises the reading.

Check your door jamb sticker for the manufacturer's recommended PSI, not the number printed on the tire's sidewall — the sidewall number is the tire's maximum rating, not what your specific vehicle needs.
