GPS trackers and dash cams get marketed close to "theft deterrent," but it's worth being precise about what they actually accomplish, since the realistic expectation changes how useful they are to you.
What a dash cam actually provides
Evidence after the fact — footage of a break-in attempt, vandalism, or the vehicle being taken, assuming it was recording (parking mode) at the time. A visible dash cam may cause an opportunistic thief to move to an easier target, but it does nothing to physically stop someone determined to break in.
What a GPS tracker actually provides
Location data after a theft has already happened — useful for recovery, and for law enforcement to act on, but it doesn't prevent the theft itself. A plug-in OBD tracker is also easy for someone who knows to look for it to simply unplug, so it's not foolproof even for recovery.
What actually deters theft, based on how thieves operate
- Visible physical deterrents (steering wheel locks) that add time and effort
- Parking in well-lit, visible areas rather than isolated spots
- Not leaving valuables visible inside the car, which is what draws attention to break into it in the first place
The realistic role of tech here
Dash cams and GPS trackers are best understood as insurance and recovery tools, not prevention tools. They meaningfully improve your odds of getting the vehicle back or having usable evidence — they don't meaningfully lower the odds of an attempt happening in the first place.
Combining them makes sense
A dash cam with parking mode plus a GPS tracker covers both ends: evidence of what happened, and location data if the vehicle is actually taken. Neither one alone covers the full picture.
Check your dash cam's parking mode battery draw before relying on it — some models can drain a car battery over several days if parking mode is left on without a low-voltage cutoff, turning a security tool into its own inconvenience.
