Ford F-150 Generations Explained: 2015-2020, 2021-Present, Lightning

The Ford F-150 comes in so many versions that two trucks from the same model year can need different floor mats, covers or trim parts. This guide walks through the 13th and 14th generations, the update that arrived for the 2024 model year, the cab and box choices, and what happened to the electric F-150 Lightning.

13th generation: 2015 to 2020

The 2015 F-150 was a full redesign and the start of the 13th generation. Ford switched the hood, body panels and bed to aluminum and mounted them on a ladder frame that used much more high-strength steel than before. Edmunds put the weight savings at up to about 700 pounds.

Launch engines were a 3.5-liter V6, a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 and a 5.0-liter V8, all with a six-speed automatic. The 2018 refresh brought an updated grille, lights, bumpers and wheels, a new 3.3-liter base V6, a 3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel V6, and a 10-speed automatic for the 2.7, 3.5 and 5.0 engines.

14th generation: 2021 to present

Ford redesigned the F-150 again for 2021 while keeping the same basic construction. Every powertrain now used a 10-speed automatic. Two additions stood out: the PowerBoost full hybrid, which pairs a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 with a hybrid electric system, and Pro Power Onboard, a built-in generator rated at 2.0, 2.4 or 7.2 kW depending on the powertrain.

The 2021 lineup ran XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum and Limited, with the off-road Tremor and Raptor alongside.

What changed for 2024

Ford showed a mid-cycle refresh at the Detroit Auto Show in September 2023, and it went on sale as the 2024 F-150. It is still the 14th generation, but several changes affect parts and accessories:

  • The 3.3-liter V6 was dropped, so the 325-hp 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 became the standard engine.
  • Each trim got its own grille design, and LED lighting became standard.
  • All trims received a 12-inch touchscreen and a 12-inch digital instrument display.
  • A new Pro Access Tailgate became available, with a center section that swings out like a door.
  • STX became a separate trim, and Platinum Plus replaced the Limited at the top of the lineup.

The practical takeaway: grille, lighting and tailgate accessories made for 2021 to 2023 trucks may not match a 2024 or newer F-150. Ford has also announced new grilles and wheel options for select 2027 XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum models, so check the model year on any exterior part.

Cab styles and box lengths

Both generations come as a Regular Cab, a SuperCab (Ford's extended cab) or a SuperCrew (its crew cab). Ford calls the bed a box, offered in 5.5-, 6.5- and 8-foot lengths. For the 2026 model year, Ford lists these pairings:

Cab Box length (2026 model year)
Regular Cab 6.5 ft or 8 ft
SuperCab 6.5 ft
SuperCrew 5.5 ft or 6.5 ft
Tremor and Raptor SuperCrew with a 5.5-ft box only

For an older truck, confirm the pairing on the window sticker or measure the box floor from the front wall to the closed tailgate.

Where the F-150 Lightning stands

The battery-electric F-150 Lightning arrived for the 2022 model year. At launch, every Lightning was a SuperCrew with a 5.5-foot box, and each had a powered front trunk where an engine would normally sit.

In December 2025, Ford confirmed that production of the all-electric Lightning had ended. Ford says the next Lightning will be an extended-range electric truck that carries a gas engine to generate electricity, built at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan. At the time of writing, Ford had not announced an on-sale date. It has said it will keep supporting current owners with service and software updates.

Quick ID checklist

  • Generation: 2015 to 2020 is the 13th; 2021 and newer is the 14th, with a styling split at 2024.
  • Cab: Regular Cab, SuperCab or SuperCrew.
  • Box: 5.5, 6.5 or 8 feet.
  • Trim and options: the window sticker or a dealer build sheet lists trim, tailgate type and powertrain.
