Honda Civic 11th Gen Guide: Sedan, Hatchback, Si, Type R and Hybrid

The 11th-generation Honda Civic arrived for the 2022 model year and is still the current Civic, with the 2027 lineup announced in October 2026. Along the way it has been offered as a sedan, a hatchback, the sporty Si, the track-focused Type R and, since a 2025 update, a hybrid. Here is how to sort them out.

2022 launch: sedan and hatchback

Honda revealed the 11th-generation sedan in April 2021. Compared with the 10th generation (2016 to 2021), its wheelbase is about 1.4 inches longer, and the styling is calmer, with a smaller grille, slim horizontal headlights and a metal mesh pattern running across the dashboard.

Sedans came in LX, Sport, EX and Touring trims. The LX and Sport used a 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 158 hp, while the EX and Touring got a turbocharged 1.5-liter rated at 180 hp. Every sedan used a CVT.

The hatchback joined the lineup in LX, Sport, EX-L and Sport Touring trims with the same two engines. Sport and Sport Touring hatchbacks offered a six-speed manual as a no-cost option.

Civic Si

The 11th-generation Si debuted in 2022. It is sold only as a sedan and only with a manual transmission. Its turbocharged 1.5-liter engine is rated at 200 hp in 2026 form, and it uses a helical limited-slip differential. The Si shared the 2025 styling update with the regular Civic and gained a revised rev-matching system with shift lights.

Civic Type R

The current Type R arrived for 2023, built on the 11th-generation hatchback. It is front-wheel drive with a six-speed manual, and its turbocharged engine is rated at 315 hp. You can spot it by its wider front and rear fenders, large pedestal-mounted rear wing and triple-outlet exhaust.

The Type R skipped the 2025 update. The 2027 Type R got its own changes instead: a more aggressive front end and splitter, heated front seats for the first time, Google built-in, revised damping in +R mode and improved brake pedal feel.

2025 update and the hybrid's return

For 2025, Honda refreshed the regular Civic with a more aggressive front bumper and revised taillights. The bigger news was the return of a Civic hybrid: a two-motor system built around a 2.0-liter engine, rated at 200 hp and 232 lb-ft, in Sport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid trims.

The hybrid replaced the 1.5-liter turbo as the step-up engine, so the EX and Touring trims were dropped. The manual transmission also left the regular sedan and hatchback, leaving the Si and Type R as the only manual Civics.

2027 changes

For 2027, Honda added a Sport-L trim with leather upholstery, heated power front seats and dual-zone climate control. The Sport Touring Hybrid gained S+ Shift, a Prelude-derived feature that simulates gear changes and rev-matched downshifts. Kelley Blue Book lists 2027 sedans in LX, Sport, Sport-L, Sport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid trims, and hatchbacks in Sport, Sport-L, Sport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid trims.

Quick identification checklist

  • EX or Touring sedan: a pre-update 2022 to 2024 car with the 1.5-liter turbo.
  • Trim name ending in Hybrid: a 2025 or newer car.
  • Manual transmission in a Sport or Sport Touring hatchback: a 2022 to 2024 car.
  • Sedan with Si badges and a manual: Civic Si.
  • Hatchback with wide fenders, a big wing and three exhaust outlets: Type R.
  • Sport-L trim: a 2027 or newer car.

Accessory fit

Sedans and hatchbacks have different rear bodies, so trunk mats and cargo liners are specific to body style. The Type R's wider fenders, wing and bumpers change how exterior parts fit, and the 2025 update reshaped the regular Civic's front bumper. For anything that depends on the body, the screen or the trim, confirm body style, trim and model year before you order.
