Locking Fuel Door with Key for Jeep Wrangler 2018-2023 (JL)

Jeep Gladiator JT Explained: Trims, Engines, Bed and Diesel Years

The Jeep Gladiator, code JT, is a midsize pickup that borrows much of the Wrangler JL's design and hardware and adds a five-foot bed. Jeep revealed it at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2018, and it has been sold since the 2020 model year. Here is what it shares with the Wrangler, how the trims differ and how the powertrains have changed.

What it shares with the Wrangler JL

From the front seats forward, a Gladiator will feel familiar to JL owners. It uses the Wrangler's platform, much of its styling, its dashboard layout and its roof options, along with the same 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. Rear-seat legroom matches the four-door Wrangler Unlimited.

The differences are mostly behind the cab. The Gladiator rides on a 137.3-inch wheelbase and carries a five-foot bed, the only bed length offered. It also never got the Wrangler's 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder. Some accessories are made to fit both the JL and the JT, but always check the listed fitment, since the longer wheelbase and bed area are unique to the Gladiator.

Removable top, doors and windshield

Like the Wrangler, the Gladiator is built for open-air driving. At launch, buyers could choose a body-color or black three-piece hardtop, both with removable Freedom Panels, or a manual folding soft top. The aluminum doors come off, and the windshield folds down. Follow your owner's manual for the steps, and if your mirrors come off with the doors, check your state's rules before driving on public roads.

Trims over the years

  • Sport, Sport S and Overland: Launch trims alongside the Rubicon. For 2025, power windows and door locks became standard on every Gladiator.
  • Rubicon: The rock-crawling trim, with the Rock-Trac transfer case and its 4:1 low range.
  • Mojave: Introduced for 2020 as the first Jeep to wear the Desert Rated badge, meant for high-speed driving on sand and desert trails. It adds Fox 2.5-inch internal bypass shocks with external reservoirs, Fox hydraulic front jounce bumpers, a one-inch front lift, a slightly wider track and a reinforced frame and axles.
  • Willys: Added for 2021, and it gained a rear locker for 2024.
  • Mojave X and Rubicon X: Added for 2024, with full-time transfer cases, integrated off-road cameras and steel bumpers front and rear.

The 2024 update also brought a new seven-slot grille, a standard 12.3-inch touchscreen, standard side curtain airbags for both rows and an antenna built into the windshield.

Engines and transmissions

Engine Model years Transmissions Notes
3.6-liter Pentastar V6 2020 to present Six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic through 2024; automatic only from 2025 Rated at 285 hp and 260 lb-ft for 2020
3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 2021 to 2023 Eight-speed automatic only Rated at 260 hp and 442 lb-ft for 2023. The last diesels were 1,000 Rubicon FarOut editions.

Jeep also planned a 4xe plug-in hybrid Gladiator, then cancelled it in September 2025.

How to identify yours

Every modern Gladiator sold since 2020 is a JT, so the generation question is simple. What matters for parts is the model year, trim, transmission and whether the truck has the 2024 update. The window sticker or a VIN lookup confirms the details.
