Toyota launched the ninth-generation Camry for the 2025 model year and made a change that affects every buyer: the Camry is now sold only as a hybrid. The 2027 Camry, due at US dealers in fall 2026, carries the design forward with little change. Here is what defines this generation and how to tell it from the 2018 to 2024 Camry.
One hybrid system, FWD or AWD
Every ninth-generation Camry uses Toyota's fifth-generation hybrid system with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Front-wheel-drive models are rated at 225 hp combined. Electronic On-Demand AWD adds a rear electric motor and raises output to 232 hp. For 2025, Toyota made AWD available on every grade, the first time a Camry Hybrid could be ordered with all-wheel drive.
There is no gas-only Camry and no V6 in this generation. Toyota describes the car as designed and assembled in the US.
Trims
The 2025 Camry launched in four grades: LE, SE, XLE and XSE. For 2026, Toyota added a Nightshade edition that swaps chrome trim for black on the grille, bumper vents, door handles, mirrors, rear spoiler, rear diffuser and other details, along with a new blue paint called Dark Cosmos. The 2027 lineup lists five grades: LE, SE, Nightshade, XLE and XSE.
Cabin and tech
LE and SE models use a 7-inch digital gauge display, while the XLE and XSE get a 12.3-inch fully digital cluster. An 8-inch touchscreen is standard and a 12.3-inch screen is available. Toyota also reshaped the seats with longer cushions and softer headrests set farther back.
What the eighth generation offered
The eighth-generation Camry (2018 to 2024) rode on Toyota's TNGA-K platform and offered three powertrains. In the 2024 model, the 2.5-liter four-cylinder was rated at 203 hp (206 hp on the XSE), the 3.5-liter V6 at 301 hp, and the hybrid at 208 hp combined.
AWD arrived for 2020, but only with the gas four-cylinder, so V6 and hybrid models were front-wheel drive. The V6 was offered on the XLE and XSE and was standard on the TRD, a sport-tuned trim that sat 0.6 inch lower. In 2024, touchscreens measured 7 or 9 inches, and the gauge cluster used a 4.2-inch or 7-inch display.
How to tell the generations apart
- Powertrain: A gas-only Camry, with or without a V6, is a 2024 or older model.
- AWD hybrid: A Camry Hybrid with AWD is a 2025 or newer model.
- TRD badge: eighth generation. The TRD is not part of the ninth-generation lineup.
- Screens: A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster or a 12.3-inch touchscreen points to the ninth generation.
- Front end: Toyota calls the ninth generation's nose a hammerhead front fascia, which gives it a different face from the 2018 to 2024 car.
- Nightshade: not a reliable clue on its own, since the 2024 lineup also included SE Nightshade models.
Accessory fit
The redesign changed the styling and the cabin, so floor mats, trunk liners, seat covers, sunshades and screen protectors made for a 2018 to 2024 Camry should not be assumed to fit a 2025 or newer model. Within the ninth generation, screen sizes differ by grade, so check your grade before buying anything screen-specific. Your registration shows the model year, and your window sticker or purchase paperwork shows the grade.
